In a round robin tournament, every participant plays every other participant once. Because everyone faces the same field, the final standings reflect performance across the complete group rather than a single knockout result.
Best for: leagues, classroom competitions and small or medium fields where equal playing opportunities matter. A single round robin with n players requires n(n − 1) ÷ 2 matches, so check the schedule before using it for a large field.

Single elimination is the simplest knockout format: the winner of each match advances and the loser leaves the championship bracket. The remaining players are reduced round by round until the final produces one champion.
Best for: events with limited time, large entry lists or a clear deadline. A field of n players needs exactly n − 1 matches, with BYEs added automatically when the player count is not a power of two.

Double elimination gives every participant a second chance. A first loss moves a player from the winners bracket into the losers bracket; a second loss ends the tournament run. The survivors of both paths meet in the grand final.
Best for: competitive events where one difficult pairing or early mistake should not immediately eliminate a strong entrant. The format usually requires close to twice as many matches as single elimination, so allow additional venue time.

A 3-game guarantee tournament combines a double-elimination path with additional placement matches. Participants who lose twice early continue into a guarantee round, so every entrant receives at least three scheduled games.
Best for: paid entry events, youth tournaments, weekend cups and travel competitions where minimum playing time is part of the value. It works with 8, 16 or 32 players and requires more time than a standard knockout.

A Swiss tournament keeps every participant active for a fixed number of rounds without requiring everyone to meet. After each round, players with similar records are paired where possible, while repeat opponents are avoided.
Best for: chess, card games, esports and larger fields that need several meaningful matches within a fixed schedule. Later pairings depend on completed results, so each round must be scored before the next one is generated.

Group stage plus playoff starts with smaller round-robin groups and advances the leading players into a single-elimination bracket. Participants receive several early matches, while the event still ends with semifinals and a decisive final.
Best for: school events, team competitions and larger fields where groups can play in parallel. Choose how many participants qualify from each group and publish the standings tie-break before play begins.
