Round Robin Schedule Formula
Calculate the schedule and understand standings before the event starts.
The match formula
In a single round robin, every pair meets once. The total is n(n − 1) ÷ 2. Six players therefore produce 15 matches; ten produce 45. In a double round robin, where every pair meets twice, use n(n − 1).
| Players | Single round robin | Rounds |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 6 | 3 |
| 6 | 15 | 5 |
| 8 | 28 | 7 |
| 10 | 45 | 9 |
How many rounds?
An even field needs n − 1 rounds with n ÷ 2 matches per round. An odd field needs n rounds, with one BYE in each round. A BYE is simply the participant without an opponent and should rotate fairly through the schedule.
Standings and tie-breaks
Award points consistently for wins, draws and losses. Table points rank participants first; score difference or another published statistic can separate equal totals. Complete score entry is important because a missing or partial score can change several positions.
Venue-time estimate
Divide the total matches by concurrent playing areas, round up and multiply by the match slot duration. If eight participants produce 28 matches and four courts are available, at least seven slots are needed. Add breaks and recovery time if the same participant could otherwise play consecutive slots.
When round robin is too large
The schedule becomes expensive as the field grows. For large groups, Swiss preserves repeated play with fewer total matches. Groups followed by playoffs can also provide several games and a compact final stage.
Frequently asked questions
What is the round robin formula?

How many rounds for an odd number?
An odd field needs n rounds, with one BYE per round.
Can games end in draws?
Yes, if the scoring policy defines points for a draw.
