How a 3-game guarantee tournament works
A 3-game guarantee tournament is designed for events where every entry should receive meaningful playing time. It starts from a double elimination structure and adds guarantee matches for participants whose main-bracket run would otherwise end after two games.
Elimly connects the winners, losers and guarantee sections in one bracket. Results route participants automatically, so the organizer can offer the three-game promise without manually rebuilding consolation pairings during the event.

How the guarantee is created
Players begin in the winners bracket and move to the losers bracket after their first defeat. A second early defeat would normally end their tournament. The guarantee section adds another scheduled matchup so those players still reach at least three games.
The added matches increase venue and staffing requirements compared with ordinary double elimination. Before choosing the format, check the number of available courts or stations and estimate match duration. The player-count summary in the builder shows the generated tournament size before you commit.
Set up the draw and record results
Select 8, 16 or 32 participants, type their names, and choose seeded or randomized placement. A seeded list is useful when rankings should reduce early mismatches. Random placement is appropriate when entries are equal or the event is social.
Record matches as they become available. Saving both scores advances the correct participant and opens dependent matches. Because the draw has several connected paths, the live shared page is safer than distributing static images that become outdated after every round.
When to offer three guaranteed games
This format works well for paid-entry events, travel tournaments and community competitions where participants expect more than one or two short appearances. The extra match can improve perceived value and gives players another opponent even after an early exit from title contention.
Do not choose it when the schedule is tight or the venue cannot support the additional guarantee round. Standard double elimination is shorter while still offering a second chance. Round robin may be fairer for small fields, but its match count grows much faster as more participants enter.
Organizer checklist
Calculate the longest possible schedule rather than only the championship path. Tell participants that guarantee games provide playing time but may not determine every final place. Assign enough courts or stations to prevent consolation matches from blocking the main bracket, and use the live page to call the next available matchup. Decide how long the venue can remain open, allow transition time between games, and keep a waiting area for participants who move into the guarantee section. Before awards are presented, distinguish the championship result from guarantee-match results so nobody assumes every consolation score changes the top standings. Record completed guarantee games promptly so waiting participants know when their third appearance is confirmed.
Frequently asked questions
Does every player really play at least three matches?
Yes. The guarantee section supplies an additional matchup for players whose winners- and losers-bracket runs would otherwise stop after two games.
Is 3-game guarantee the same as triple elimination?
No. It guarantees playing opportunities but does not necessarily use three losses to determine every final placement.
Which field sizes are supported?
Elimly supports 8, 16 and 32 players for this format so all connected bracket sections remain consistent.
When should I use standard double elimination instead?
Choose standard double elimination when two guaranteed opportunities are enough or when venue time cannot accommodate the extra guarantee matches.
