How group stage and playoff tournaments work

Group stage + playoff combines two useful ideas: guaranteed group matches at the start and a decisive knockout finish. Participants are divided into round-robin groups, the best finishers qualify, and those qualifiers enter a single elimination playoff.

Elimly generates both phases, calculates each group table, identifies qualifiers from the configured places, and builds the playoff once the required group results are complete.

Groups, qualifiers and playoff size

Choose the number of groups and how many participants advance from each one. Every participant meets the other members of their group once. The number of playoff entries equals groups multiplied by qualifiers per group, so two groups with two qualifiers create a four-player semifinal bracket.

Balanced group sizes make the schedule and qualification race easier to understand. When the field does not divide evenly, some groups may contain one extra participant and therefore play more matches. Check the match estimate beside the player count and make sure the resulting playoff size fits the event plan.

Group scoring and qualification

Configure points for wins, draws and losses before generating the event. Each group table ranks participants by table points and then the selected tie-break, using score difference or total score. Results should include the real scores because those values can decide qualification.

Once all required group matches are finished, the leading participants feed into the playoff. The playoff itself does not allow drawn results because one participant must advance. An optional third-place match can provide a final ranking match for the losing semifinalists.

When to combine groups and playoffs

This structure is useful for school tournaments, esports events and multi-pool competitions where participants should get several early games but spectators still expect semifinals and a final. Groups can run in parallel across courts or stations, making good use of a larger venue.

The format needs more planning than a pure knockout and can create unequal rest periods if group sizes differ. Use round robin when the field is small enough for one shared table. Use Swiss when a large field must play a fixed number of rounds without being divided into permanent groups.

Organizer checklist

Publish the group allocation, qualification places and tie-break in advance. Run groups in parallel where possible, but verify every table before the playoff begins. Allow comparable rest time for qualifiers from different groups and make it clear that drawn group matches may be allowed even though every playoff match needs a winner.

Frequently asked questions

How many players advance from each group?

Choose either the top one or top two during setup. The total playoff size is the number of groups multiplied by that choice.

How are group standings ranked?

Group points come first, followed by the configured score-difference or total-score tie-break.

When is the playoff generated?

The playoff becomes available after the group results required to determine the qualifiers have been completed.

Can the playoff have a third-place match?

Yes. Enable the third-place option before creating the tournament to match the two losing semifinalists.
