How Many Matches Are in a Tournament?
Simple formulas and examples for estimating event length.
Why match count matters
A realistic total determines venue hours, staffing, stream coverage and rest time. Multiply matches by average match duration, then account for the number of courts or stations operating in parallel. Add changeover and delay buffers instead of assuming continuous play.
Single and double elimination
Single elimination needs n − 1 matches, plus one for an optional third-place match. Double elimination normally needs 2n − 2 with one grand final and up to 2n − 1 when a reset may be required.

Round robin
A single round robin requires n(n − 1) ÷ 2 matches. A double round robin doubles that to n(n − 1). Growth is quadratic, so expanding from 8 to 16 players raises a single round robin from 28 to 120 matches.
Swiss and guarantee formats
With an even field, Swiss uses n ÷ 2 matches per round, multiplied by the scheduled rounds. With an odd field, one participant receives a BYE. A 3-game guarantee is designed around minimum participation; exact totals depend on the generated bracket and field size.
Groups followed by playoffs
Calculate each group separately with g(g − 1) ÷ 2, sum the groups and add q − 1 playoff matches for q qualifiers. Add one more if the playoff has a third-place match. Uneven groups need separate calculations.
